Next-gen Volkswagen models to get steer-by-wire

German car-maker reveals how it will make its future cars safer and more comfortable

Volkswagen is readying an advanced new steering system that will sever the physical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels.

Replacing a conventional steering column with a set of sophisticated sensors, next-generation Volkswagen models will feature a steering rack with electric motors that accurately replicate feedback from the steering wheel, thanks to advanced new software.

In a video featuring the German car-maker's head of driving dynamics, Karsten Schebsdat, a prototype Volkswagen ID.3 is shown, suggesting the electric car might be among the first recipients of the new tech.

Meanwhile, a prototype Volkswagen Arteon was shown equipped with measures to reduce pitch and improve composure over bumpy roads, improving ride comfort.

In the future, Volkswagen models will also come with front-facing sensors and cameras that read the road surface to automatically pre-arm the dampers to road conditions ahead.

Interior cameras will also monitor the driver to ensure he or she is viewing the road ahead, even when the car is operating in its semi-autonomous driving modes.

The weight of EVs will become more comparable to combustion vehicles thanks to lighter next-gen batteries, and as a result of VW resisting the urge to chase for maximum range.

Lightweight composites will also play a role.

New hardware like torque-splitters (that can send up to 100 per cent of torque to a single wheel) and advanced torque vectoring will also play a part in ensuring electric VWs of the future will outperform today's cars.
