From today (May 1), Chinese car-maker Nio will offer its new-generation 150kW semi-solid-state battery to EV customers in its home market, but only through its own rent-a-car service at this stage.
In what is effectively a public trial, Nio will offer the advanced new power pack on select EVs such as the ET5 through its Nio Destination program, which will allow the company to monitor the advanced long-range battery’s performance.
From June 1, Nio EV owners will also gain access to the 150kWh battery via the brand’s battery-swap network, but it will still be a pay-as-you-go affair.
Those with a 70kWh or 75kWh battery will be charged 150 Chinese yuan ($A30) per day to use the 150kWh pack (which is the same size as a 70kWh unit), while those who already have the biggest 100kWh battery will only pay 100 yuan ($20) per day.
As demonstrated in the new Nio ET7 recently, the 150kWh battery enables a range of more than 1000km.
In the real-world test, the ET7 drove 1070km on a single charge while cruising at highway speeds, climbing altitudes of up to 1875m and carrying more than 200kg of cargo.
Nio has yet to reveal just how fast its new semi-solid-state battery takes to recharge, but it’s thought to be capable of being topped-up well beyond the 350kW rate of the fastest-charging vehicles on the market.
