The Altima race cars Nissan Motorsport's Kelly brothers will drive in this month's Wilson Security Sandown 500 will be finished in a retro style of livery inspired by the Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE) Datsuns of the 1970s.
BRE was headed by American Pete Brock – not to be confused with iconic Holden driver, Peter Brock – and won numerous SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and Trans Am races in various Datsun-badged Nissans.
The livery that was a signature trait of the BRE Datsuns has been adopted for both Todd Kelly's #7 carsales.com.au Altima, and Rick Kelly's #15 Sengled Racing Altima.
Fellow Nissan drivers Michael Caruso and Dean Fiore will also run the #23 Altima in heritage livery, in that case a design adorning the R32 GT-R that competed in the Japanese Touring Car Championship between 1990 and 1993.
Sandown hosts the retro round each year, when all Supercar teams roll out livery paying homage to the good old days. The event this year runs across the weekend of September 15-17 and is the first round of the Pirtek Endurance Cup.
Joining Todd in the #7 car for the endurance rounds is Jack Le Brocq, and David Wall will be sharing the driving in the #15 car with Rick.
"This livery is quite special," says Todd Kelly. "Not only does the car celebrate Nissan's racing past, but also this year marks carsales' 20th anniversary. So to be able to celebrate both of these achievements at the Retro Round is really great."
His partner for the endurance series has been competing in the Super2 series during 2017.
"Jack has been doing a great job in the Super2 series this year," continued Kelly. "He's also driven really well in his main game wild card appearances. So to have a young guy who is really familiar with the Altima will be beneficial for the longer races."
Brother Rick, the leading Nissan driver in the Supercars Championship, is chuffed to be driving a car that recalls the BRE days.
"The colours of the car are really iconic and really capture the spirit of the retro round," he said.
"There's been a lot to celebrate in terms of Nissan's racing history in Australia, but this year we decided to look abroad and to their domination of American road racing in the early 70s. We're all familiar with Australia's Peter Brock, but America's Pete Brock ran fast Nissans in the 60s and 70s to great success. So it's fun to share this history with everyone."
Of his co-driver for the endurance rounds – Sandown, Bathurst and the Gold Coast 600 – Rick has nothing but praise.
"David has done everything asked of him so far and I'm excited to start our enduro campaign together," said Kelly. "This week we'll work on driver changes and fine tuning ahead of Wednesday's test day at Winton."
