Nissan has unveiled the fourth and final member of its new Hyper series of concept vehicles, all of which will be on display at the Japan Mobility Show next week.
Joining the previously seen Hyper Urban, Hyper Active and Hyper Tourer, the 2023 Nissan Hyper Punk concept is described as “an all-electric compact crossover tailored for content creators, influencers, artists, and those who embrace style and innovation”.
In normal speak it translates to a funky electric crossover with a left-field design and a heap of new-age connectivity technology including vehicle-to-everything (V2X), AI-generated scenery or graphic patterns inspired by the outside conditions, tri-screen cockpit, connected services and even mood detection.
The exterior design is awash with hard edges but headlined by its high-riding coupe silhouette and a high hipline accentuated by overzealous wheel-arches and a futuristic wheel design sporting triangular illumination.
The interior is similarly complex with myriad lines, shapes and sharp angles, combining with a white (passenger side) and red (driver’s side) colourway to help emphasise the different occupant compartments.
Would-be drivers steer via a rectangular yoke, which seems to be all the rage at the moment, and unlike some of the other Hyper concepts there’s no dedicated infotainment interface – it’s all bundled into the digital instrument cluster.
It’s had to know if the Hyper Punk is previewing an upcoming production model or not, but it would be reasonable to bet against it given the others can feasibly be linked an SUV or MPV of some description.
“With an exterior aesthetic defined by multifaceted and polygonal surfaces, the Nissan Hyper Punk stands out from the crowd especially thanks to the tones in the silver paint that shift depending on viewing angle and light source,” Nissan said.
“The design’s superior aerodynamic performance and its bold powerful style, which goes against the minimalist design, represent the user's desire for self-expression and breaking conventional wisdom and Nissan’s progressive approach to introducing new technologies and designs.”
Formerly known as the Tokyo motor show, the 2023 Japan Mobility Show will open on October 26 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre, where the Hyper Punk and the rest of Nissan’s Hyper concept series will be on display alongside the Nissan Ariya, Skyline NISMO, GT-R NISMO Special Edition, Z NISMO and a Formula E racer.
“In addition, from October 25, the concept vehicles will become available on the online game Fortnite under the name ‘Electrify the World’ for further exploration and enjoyment of these special vehicles,” said Nissan.
