Nissan has recalled a further 17,393 previous-generation Y61 Patrol and D22 Navara vehicles -- 20,906 in total – to fix airbags that can potentially spray vehicle occupants with shrapnel.
Covering both models sold between 2009 and 2012, the recall is in addition to the previous recalls issued for 2007-2008 versions of both the D22 ute and Y61 wagon/ute.
The problem relates to the massive global recall of airbags produced by Japanese airbag manufacturer Takata, which has so far affected well over 60 million vehicles globally and more than 1.5 million in Australia.
Most recently, Subaru recalled more than 34,500 MY2009 Forester and MY08/09 Impreza vehicles as part of the recall, which covers a range of manufacturers including Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.
Honda is the brand most affected by the recall in Australia, where about 425,000 Honda cars are affected.
Honda Australia this week told motoring.com.au that of the 600,000 or so faulty airbag inflators affected, it has replaced about 300,000 (in most affected cars, more than one airbag needs replacing).
Honda dealers have been replacing 7000 inflators a week over the past few months – down from a peak of 10,000 – as part of the recall, which involves at least 13 separate Honda recalls and will take the Japanese brand at least another 12 months to resolve even with free parts supplies.
The company's Australian call centre has employed 24 staff to deal mainly with the Takata airbag issue since April, and its dealers have invested in new technicians and longer service hours to cope with unprecedented airbag replacement, which is being funded by Honda Motor Co in Japan.
In Nissan's case, the recall covers more than 270,000 vehicles across its Micra, Tiida, Maxima, X-TRAIL and Navara model lines, and the latest recall covers D22 Navaras and Y61 Patrols sold between June 2009 and December 2012.
"Certain passenger airbag inflators may allow moisture to enter the airbag inflator causing the propellant in the inflator units to deteriorate. Deterioration of the propellant may lead to abnormal deployment of the passenger airbag," said Nissan.
"Abnormal passenger airbag deployment or metal fragment scatter may pose a hazard to the occupants of the vehicle.
"Once parts availability is confirmed, owners of affected vehicles will be advised to contact their Nissan dealer to arrange for replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator. The replacement will be at no cost to owners."
