Porsche is still to decide on whether it will build a car to slot in between the 911 and its soon to be released 918 hybrid supercar. Long rumoured and the subject of "deep consideration" by Porsche's executive and engineers, the new car is still yet to get the go-ahead.
"It is still being discussed," a senior Porsche official told motoring.com.au at this week's 981 series Cayman launch in Portugal.
"The business case is still being discussed, but also many [other] aspects of the car [are also under discussion]." he said.
"It is still years away," he stated.
Porsche insiders will not be drawn on details of the car – for example whether it will be front, mid or rear engine – but say it will almost certainly take a clean-sheet approach.
"We see 959 and Carrera GT as predecessors for the 918. If we build a car to place over the 911, it will be a new model line – like Macan."
They are also happy to narrow on the target of the car, however.
"We should not target this car at the [Ferrari] 458," our contact stated.
"Those levels of performance, we can target via the new 911 Turbo. For sure the F12 would be more the car to fight with," he said.
Porsche could tackle the performance equation with innovative solutions, he suggested.
"I see guys at Weissach [Porsche's development HQ] with so many ideas – some almost crazy. But these are ideas that could [be used in a future supercar]," he said.
