No plans for Ford Everest PHEV – yet

Ford boss has ‘nothing to share today’ on Everest plug-in hybrid, but SUV is expected to adopt PHEV tech

The 2025 Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid ute revealed today is expected to spawn a PHEV version of the related Ford Everest, however the Blue Oval brand has yet to confirm the family SUV will adopt the technology.

Addressing the issue at a media briefing on the Ranger PHEV, Ford Australia president and CEO Andrew Birkic said there were no announcements to make regarding a Ford Everest Plug-in Hybrid.

“We’re really thrilled with Everest, we know our dealers get wonderful feedback,” he said, citing the continued high demand for V6 models in particular.

“We’re really happy with the progress of Everest – we have nothing to share today about our powertrain.”

Just as the latest Ford Everest made its world debut some three months after the Ranger appeared, we’d expect a similar strategy for the PHEV announcement.

Ford has previously made it clear that it is working on electrified variants of both the Ranger and Everest.

Hybrid powertrains are now common among large SUVs, but plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles less so, particularly in the off-road corner of the market.

One exception is the new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, but the landscape should change dramatically in the years ahead as new-generation utes and their SUV derivatives arrive, such as the Toyota HiLux/Fortuner and Mitsubishi Triton/Pajero Sport.

Isuzu also has hybrid on the agenda for its popular D-MAX and MU-X twins, while Volkswagen plans to get in on the EV/PHEV act – even if its model-sharing arrangement with the Ford Ranger/VW Amarok doesn’t extend to Everest and a VW-branded SUV.
