Now you can make your Tesla Model 3 sound like a V8

We’ve all heard about or experienced the otherworldly acceleration of the Tesla Model 3. Now a UK firm has developed artificial bark to match the EV’s real-world bite.

Milltek Sport, an exhaust manufacturer that typically deals in European performance cars, has developed a muffler with a built-in speaker that creates artificial noise.

In total, there are eight different high-performance sounds, allowing Model 3 owners to channel V8, V10 or even V12 soundtracks.

“Active Sound (ASU) from Milltek Sport is an innovative solution to enable a user controllable exhaust sound to be made on vehicles that traditionally lack the sound and tone that owners desire,” says Milltek Sport’s website.

“Suitable for a wide range of vehicles, the growing range includes hybrids, EV and diesels. Including eight selectable sound files, volume, pitch and tone adjustment with user configurable profiles all controlled via Milltek’s own iPhone or Android app.”

As with an internal combustion engine’s exhaust, the Milltek Sport’s novel ‘muffler’ emits more sound as the Model 3 is driven faster or accelerates harder.

The first examples are hitting streets in the UK this month, priced from about $A2400. Milltek Sport has 24 dealers in Australia and New Zealand, but it’s not yet known if or when the ASU muffler will be available Down Under.

While cynics may deride the Milltek Sport idea as an expensive indulgence, the fake muffler could have safety benefits – helping road users and pedestrians detect oncoming EVs that would otherwise be silent except for the artificial exterior whir mandated in many countries.
