Official pics: Skoda Superb wagon

More space, pace and up to 30 per cent more efficient. On sale in Europe September

Skoda has revealed its big new replacement for the Superb wagon.

Like the sedan the new wagon is based on Volkswagen Group’s versatile MQB platform.
Externally, the new wagon has a wheelbase extended to 2841mm (+80mm) that, like the sedan, enable Skoda to boast class-best cabin space and luggage room.

Boot space is 660-litre seats up and 1950-litre seats down.

There are five petrol engines and three diesels for the European Superbs and all of them are four-cylinder turbocharged units that are said to be up to 30 per cent more efficient. Australia, though, is taking just three: the 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel, the 162kW/350Nm 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol motor (expected to be the volume version) and an all-wheel drive 206kW/350Nm turbocharged four.

There’s no manual gearbox option for us. Instead, all engines come with the six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmissions.

A host of new driver assistance technologies will be available, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Crew Protect Assist, Lane Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Assist, Blind Spot Detect, Rear Traffic Alert, Travel Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition and Driver Alert fatigue detection.

Bi-xenon headlight including LED daytime running lights will be optional, as will Light Assist and Smart Light Assist automatic high-beam control.

Standard safety features include seven airbags, electronic stability control, Multi-Collision Brake, Front Assist with City Emergency Brake, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, an XDS+ electronic differential lock and five three-point seat belts with reminders.

Inside, satnav is expected to be standard on all models, while high-end models will come with a large 8-inch infotainment system that will integrate high-speed internet access via an LTE connection. The wagon will also come with smartphone connectivity with the ability to operate selected apps via the touch-screen, and SmartLink including MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Set to go on sale early next year the wagon should arrive around the same time as the big sedan with prices kicking off from around $40,000.
