Opel has arrived in Australia finally. The German GM brand previously known for its Holden-badged imported product line is now here in its own right. As motoring.com.au has reported in the past, the company's launch product portfolio will comprise light, small and medium passenger car offerings: Corsa, Astra and Insignia, respectively. Insignia will top Opel's local product range in two body styles, four-door sedan or wagon (Sports Tourer). Available in just two levels of trim locally, the Insignia range for Australia misses out on the high-spec, high-output GTC version, although Opel will make available the hard-core GTC variant of the smaller Astra for the local market.
Like Corsa and Astra, the Insignia range kicks off with the self-named ‘Insignia’ variant at the model’s entry end. The standard model is generously specified with features that include front seat heaters, dual-zone climate control, auto headlamps, a seven-speaker audio system with USB connectivity, leather-bound steering wheel and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The Insignia range is topped by the Insignia Select model variant, which adds a seven-inch colour screen LED daytime running lamps, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, front seat ventilation, AGR-accredited front seats, a sports leather steering wheel, alloy pedals and 19-inch alloy wheels to those features listed for the entry model.
All Insignia variants are powered by either of two four-cylinder engines of the same cubic capacity. Petrol variants are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder ECOTEC direct injected turbocharged petrol engine mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. Entry level sedan models featuring the petrol engine are priced from $38,490 and Sports Tourer models retail from $40,490. Diesel-powered 2.0T Diesel variants come with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder CDTI ECOTEC turbocharged diesel mill that is again offered exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission. It is priced from $39,990 for the sedan and $41,990 for the wagon.
Petrol-powered Insignia models deliver 162kW and 350Nm, and consume 8.8L/100km of fuel on the combined cycle (9.0L/100km for Sports Tourer). CO2 emissions are rated at 206g/km and 211g/km respectively. Insignia diesel variants use 5.7 litres of fuel to cover 100km (6.0L/100km for Sports Tourer) and emit 151g/km of CO2 in sedan format or 157g/km for the Sports Tourer. The 2.0-litre turbodiesel produces 118kW/350Nm.
Moving up to the range-topping Insignia Select petrol-powered variants are priced from $45,490 in sedan form and $47,490 for Sports Tourer models. As in other levels of trim the engine is paired exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission as standard (no manual transmission is offered in Australia-spec Insignia models).
Insignia Select diesel variants are priced from $46,990 for the sedan and $48,990 for the wagon.
All Insignia models achieve a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating with stability control, traction control, antilock brakes and front, side and curtain airbags fitted as standard to every model in the range.
