PARIS MOTOR SHOW: Kia's new Rondo surfaces

Small seven-seater gets the Schreyer treatment
Kia will turn up to Paris with an all-new Carens MPV – the vehicle sold in Australia as the Rondo. The design of the new model has been previewed already, but Kia has now released a new batch of official images that provide a better idea of how the car will look in reality.
“The new Carens builds on the family-friendly versatility and functionality of its predecessor, and features more athletic and visually dynamic design,” company Vice Chairman and CEO, Hyoung-Keun Lee, was quoted saying in a press release. “This marks a dramatic shift forward for our MPV contender and brings the model in line with Kia’s distinctive current design direction.”
Capable of seating seven – as long as at least two are kids – the current (second-generation) Rondo has been an indifferent performer in the Australian market. To date just 248 units have been sold during 2012, which is barely one tenth of the total sales over the same period for the much larger and more expensive Carnival. But the Kia is out-performing the Citroen C4 Picasso, which is one of the few comparable vehicles in the market.
Nonetheless, Kia will be looking forward to considerably stronger sales from the third-generation Rondo/Carens, which is built on an altogether new platform.
Also on the stand in Paris next week, Kia will roll out the new Sorento, the Optima Hybrid and the three-door version of the cee'd, which is named pro_cee'd (what is it with Kia's funky punctuation?).
motoring.com.au will be attending the motor show as guests of Kia and will report from Paris concerning the new Rondo's timing for Australia.
