Peugeot 2008 has Trax in sight

And small French SUV beats Juke, Captur, EcoSport to market
The pressure is mounting for MINI's Countryman and Suzuki's SX4, now that Peugeot 2008 has arrived.
Leading a new wave of micro SUVs headed our way, the 2008 is priced to cause heartburn at Holden's corporate headquarters too.
Where previously there was no battle of the lion brands, there certainly is now, with Peugeot setting the entry-level price for the 2008 Active at $21,990 – well short of the $23,490 starting price for the Trax .
For that price, however, all you get is a 1.2-litre petrol engine and manual transmission in the 2008 Active. As with the Trax and Ford's upcoming EcoSport, all 2008s are front-wheel drive. $1500 more than the base Trax ($24,990) will put you in the driver's seat of the 1.6-litre version with automatic transmission.
Moving up one place in the model hierarchy, the mid-range 2008 Allure, which Peugeot Australia believes will be the volume-selling model in the range, is priced at $27,990 (manual) or $29,990 (auto). Like the auto variant of the 2008 Active, the 2008 Allure is powered by the 1.6-litre petrol engine.
Capping the range is the 2008 Outdoor, with 1.6-litre diesel and manual transmission for $31,990.
The 1.2-litre engine in the entry-level model is a three-cylinder, developing 60kW and 180Nm. It drives via a five-speed manual transmission, combined-cycle fuel economy is 4.9L/100km and CO2 emissions are rated at 114g/km on the same test.
Available in both Active (auto only) and Allure grades, the 1.6-litre engine is a petrol four-cylinder good for 88kW and 160Nm. Drive is via five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic. Official fuel consumption is 5.9L/100km (manual) and 6.5L/100km (auto), with CO2 emissions measuring 135 (manual) or 150g/km (auto).
The diesel drivetrain in the 2008 Outdoor comprises a 1.6-litre four-cylinder coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. Output is 68kW and 230Nm, while the fuel consumption and CO2 figures are 4.0L/100km and 103g/km respectively.
Measuring just 4.16 metres long, the 2008 is based heavily on the 208 light hatch, which is just 200mm shorter, but 96mm lower and a ground clearance of 165mm. 67 per cent of the SUV's underpinnings are shared with the hatch, Peugeot claims, although the 2008 has a 'contoured roof' with a waveline forming from the B-pillar and working back along the roof for added rear-seat headroom. Luggage capacity is 410 litres with a low-loading lip (600mm) and a restraining strap on one side and a storage net on the other.
Standard equipment for the entry-level 2008 Active includes cruise control/speed limiter, remote central locking, reverse parking sensors, height/reach-adjustable steering, electrochromatic mirror, electrically-adjustable/heated auto folding mirrors, air conditioning, trip computer, six-speaker audio with remote controls on the steering wheel, Bluetooth with audio streaming/USB port, leather-bound steering wheel, 16-inch alloy wheels, front/rear fog lights and cloth seat trim.
To this the 2008 Allure adds satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, front map lights, illuminated vanity mirrors, leather-trimmed handbrake, chrome mirror caps, panoramic glass sunroof with LED lights/sunblind, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, follow-me-home function, height-adjustable front passenger seat and, leather/cloth upholstery combination.
Flagship of the range, the 2008 Outdoor, rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and features as standard Grip Control for heavy-duty off-road work.
Safety features across the range comprise six airbags, stability control, ABS/EBD, Brake Assist, reversing camera, auto door unlocking (in a crash) and auto hazard lights under emergency braking.
Eight colours are available for the 2008: Makaha Brown, Artense Grey, Platinum Grey, Spirit Grey, Calado Blue, Perla Nera Black, Bianca White and Pearl White.
