Peugeot has cut prices for its 508 GT sedan and Touring body styles by over $3000, with the sedan now starting at $59,990 drive-away and the Touring now priced at $62,990 drive-away.
Headlined by the brand's all-new Euro 6-compliant turbo-diesel, the updated model is claimed to offer a driving range of up to 1636km from one tank in the sedan, while the GT Touring wagon will deliver a still respectable 1565km range.
The new powertrain responsible for these bold claims is a new 2.0-litre BlueHDi turbo-diesel engine that develops 133kw and 400Nm, capable of propelling the 508 from standstill to 100km/h in 8.6 seconds.
This engine replaces the outgoing model's Euro-5 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, reducing claimed fuel consumption by one litre to 4.4L/100km, and slashing emissions to 114g/km (down from 140g/km).
Other Euro 6-rated models in Peugeot's local range include the 308 hatchback range which features the PSA group's PureTech turbo-petrol and BlueHDi diesel powertrains.
General Manager for Peugeot Australia, John Startari, said that this new drivetrain for the 508 GT models represents a fundamental shift in drivetrain technology.
"Peugeot has over 125 years' experience in engine, transmission and drivetrain technology," said Startari.
"This new generation of Euro 6 powerplants prove Australians can have their cake and eat it too, with the power, performance and economy demanded by local customers."
"The 508 GT signals a shift to Euro 6 engines across as many of our vehicle lines as quickly as possible, with the 208 range the next beneficiary of Euro 6 powerplants," he added.
In 2014, Peugeot globally offered 20 vehicles with the lowest CO2 emission levels in the world in their respective power classes. This placed the marque in the top three of the European CAFE rankings with their average CO2 emissions at 109.5g/km.
The updated 508 GT arrives in dealerships from mid-September and joins the existing face-lifted 508 range.
