The replacement for Peugeot's 407 and 607 models has today had its pricing and specification announced in the UK. The all-new Peugeot 508 is to be offered with a choice of five model designations, seven engine choices and Peugeot's latest second-generation micro-hybrid system with stop-start technology.
Slated for UK showroom delivery this April, the 508 will be available from launch in both sedan and wagon body styles, both of which promote the brand's confident new styling direction. Coupled to a well-equipped, modern interior, the new 508 range will be priced from just £18,150 (AUD$28,250) in the UK.
Two petrol engines both of 1.6-litres capacity will be available under the bonnet. The entry-level 1.6 VTi EGC offers 88kW/158Nm while the up-spec 1.6 THP manual pumps out 115kW/244Nm.
In diesel guise, the options spread to five. The entry-level 1.6 HDi unit delivers 82kW/244Nm and is available with either a five-speed manual gearbox or Peugeot's innovative e-HDi Stop & Start System with a six-speed electronically controlled manual gearbox (EGC). A trio of 2.0 HDi variants deliver 103kW/325Nm, 120kW/345Nm and 150kW/458Nm respectively and are also available in both manual and automatic guise depending on output.
Fuel economy and CO2 emissions are as low as 3.6L/100km and 109g/km.
The Peugeot 508 will be available with two different front suspension arrangements. An all-new pseudo McPherson type will be offered on the majority of the range while the sportier 508 GT gains a drop link double wishbone set up which helps separate suspension and steering forces to improve road holding and steering accuracy. At the rear, all models are equipped with multi-link arrangement.
Locally, the Peugeot 508 will be in showrooms from July 1, coinciding with its public release at this year's Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) in Melbourne.
"Specification and engine line up isn't 100 per cent confirmed and we won't have all the details locked in until production commences in March," said Peugeot Australia's events and promotions manager, Kirin Tipping. "However, we will offer sedan, wagon and GT variants. Unfortunately, the wagon won't be available from launch due to production limitations and will most likely go on sale in September."
When asked if model grade and engine line up had been confirmed, Tipping said that a range of diesel powerplants will be offered with the petrol versions not suited to Peugeot's Australian target market.
"We're looking at the 2.0 HDi and 2.2 HDi from launch but the 1.6 HDi is still the subject of market evaluation," she said. "Australian buyers seem to prefer a little more performance. Local tastes mean the 1.6 THP engine is unlikely for wider sale though customers may be able to purchase the 1.6 VTi engine with EGC transmission as a dealer order. We haven't decided yet."
Tipping also explained that trim specification and the availability of Stop-Start technology is under consideration but not yet confirmed.
More details will be made available closer to the 508's press launch in late June.
