Peugeot considers 408
Small sedan may join local Peugeot range from unlikely quarter – MalaysiaPeugeot is considering the addition of the 408 sedan to its local line-up.
Rather than an updated version of the medium-sized 407, the 408 very much sits in the Small car class. The 308-based four-door was first unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in 2010
Designed and built primarily for the Chinese market, the 408 is also manufactured and sold in markets such as Russia and Argentina. But rather than China or South America, Aussie 408s could be sourced from an unusual source – Malaysia.
According to a report in a Kuala Lumpur edition of the New Straits Times last week, local Malay Peugeot partner Nasim Sdn Bhd will export up to 1500 Malaysian-assembled 408s in 2013-14 to markets “including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.”
Peugeot Automobiles Australia boss Bill Gillespie confirmed his operation was considering the 408 for local release but cautioned no decision had been made.
“We’ve been asked if we would consider the 408 for the Australian market,” he told motoring.com.au.
“We have a car here and we have [Australian] complied the car but at this stage we have not decided whether we will add the car to our line-up.
“There’s no hard timeline – we have plenty of new-model action on our plate currently,” Gillespie stated.
