The Polestar O2 electric roadster concept revealed in Los Angeles in March has been confirmed to enter production as the Polestar 6 in 2026 – and Aussies can now reserve a build slot for one of 500 special versions to be called the Polestar 6 LA Concept edition via the Polestar Australia website for $US25,000.
Targeted to cost around $US200,000 when it’s launched in four years, the Polestar 6 roadster – a spiritual successor to the Volvo sister brand's debut model, the Polestar 1 hybrid coupe not sold in Australia) – will follow the existing Polestar 2 fastback, the upcoming Polestar 3 large SUV, Polestar 4 mid-size SUV and the Polestar 5 four-door grand tourer due in 2024.
As with the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S-rivalling Polestar 5, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said the Polestar 6 builds on the design, technology and sustainability targets identified by the Polestar Precept concept, and showcases the all-electric brand’s vision for future sports cars.
“With the overwhelming consumer and press response, we took the decision to put this stunning roadster into production and I am so excited to make it a reality,” he said.
“Polestar 6 is a perfect combination of powerful electric performance and the thrill of fresh air with the top down.”
The Polestar 6 will be based on the Chinese-Swedish car-maker’s bespoke bonded aluminium platform and incorporate the same high-performance 800-volt electric architecture already confirmed for Polestar 5.
The striking hard-top electric convertible will also employ the same mammoth 650kW/900Nm dual-motor powertrain as the Polestar 5, which will target the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, in this case delivering a targeted 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h, says the EV brand.
To celebrate the launch, 500 numbered units of a special ‘Polestar 6 LA Concept edition’, are planned to be produced, each featuring the unique Sky blue exterior, light leather interior and unique 21-inch wheels of the original Polestar O2 concept.
Polestar says it will confirm more details and specifications for the Polestar 6 “as the production car becomes reality, leading up to the expected launch in 2026”.
The announcement was made ahead of the electric roadster concept’s appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and other events during Monterey Car Week in California this weekend (August 18-21).
