Porsche has locked in an August 17 reveal date for its new-generation 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and hinted that the halo track weapon might actually be down on power compared to the lesser GT3.
The revelation came from Porsche GT model line director Andreas Preuninger, who said the “spontaneously responsive, high-revving 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with approximately 500ps has proven ideal for use at track days and club sport events”.
Converted directly to kiloWatts, 500ps is equal to 368kW – 7kW less than the 375kW peak power output of the regular GT3.
Preuninger went on to say the new “GT3 RS is even more optimised for track use than its predecessors” and that the development team “focused primarily on aerodynamics and chassis questions”.
Unless the 500ps reference is deliberately conservative, it will be the first time in the model’s history that the RS has produced less power than its donor model; the stripped-out GT3 RS has traditionally developed between 10-25kW more than the equivalent GT3 save for the 996 generation when both GT3 models had identical power figures… officially at least.
Nevertheless, Porsche also released a fresh teaser image to accompany its world debut confirmation, which really only gives us an official look at what we’ve seen previously via a series of spy images.
As expected, the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS is clearly more aggressive than the standard GT3 both in terms of its aero package and chassis set-up, appearing to sit a little closer to the road compared to its mildly more road-focussed sibling.
Regardless of what happens with engine outputs, the GT3 RS will shave at least 20kg off the GT3’s 1435kg kerb weight, which should make for improved acceleration and cornering – especially in conjunction with the more aggressive aero package.
