Porsche 911 Project Gold is go

Enthusiasts rejoice: Porsche’s 1990s in-house restomod is revealed in full

After 18 months of painstaking, hand-crafted workmanship, the Porsche Classic workshop has now finished its gob-smacking homage to the iconic Porsche 993-series 911 Turbo S.

Meet Project Gold.

Starting with the bodyshell of a 993 Porsche 911, which was produced between 1993 and 1998, the car was created using the huge catalogue of more than 52,000 parts stocked by Porsche Classic.

The 993-series Porsche 911 had a total of 6500 parts to choose from, including 18-inch alloy wheels and hand-made seats that were used to create a brand-new original celebrating the brand’s 70th anniversary.

Built by Porsche Classic at its workshop in Stuttgart, and fitted with a “brand new” 3.6-litre air-cooled twin-turbo six-cylinder boxer engine in its derriere, Porsche calls its Project Gold a collector’s item.

Peak power is 450hp, or around 335kW, which finds its way to all four wheels via a manual transmission.

Everything from the chassis to the interior was sourced from Porsche Classic’s genuine parts catalogue, making Project Gold a bold advertisement to owners of air-cooled Porsches who need to restore their vehicles.

“Project Gold showcases the comprehensive skill of Porsche Classic in fascinating fashion,” said Detlev von Platen, Porsche’s sales and marketing chieftan.

“Although we are starting a new chapter in our sports car history with the Porsche Taycan, the story of how the company evolved is no less significant.

“On the contrary, this Golden Yellow 993 demonstrates how incredibly passionate we are about the tradition of our brand,” said Detlev.

As previously reported, Porsche Classic is understood to be plotting a new line of ultra-rare custom 911s in future.

Project Gold is a showcase for Porsche’s heritage parts collection and shows what can achieved given very, very large sums of money.

No price has been attached to this build but the gob-smacking 993 Porsche 911 Turbo S will be auctioned by RM Sotheby at the Porsche 70th Anniversary Sale auction in Atlanta, Georgia on October 27.
