Porsche has announced it has green lit the all-electric Mission E sports car that it revealed in September at the Frankfurt motor show.
For the unveiling of the Mission E, the German manufacturer announced the high-performance EV would come with two electric motors that, combined, produce 440kW.
This, says Porsche, is enough to launch the Mission E to 100km/h, from standstill, in just 3.5 seconds.
Charging, says Porsche, is via a new 800V charger made especially for the car. The super fast charging device is said to be twice as powerful as the quickest chargers available today. That means it takes just 15 minutes for an 80 per cent charge. An additional wireless charger that charges via an induction plate on the floor will also be offered.
The range of the Mission E when fully charged is more than 500km.
Set to launch “at the end of this decade” the first ever pure electric car from the iconic prestige sports car brand will cost a billion euros of R&D investment by the German car-maker.
Creating an additional 1000 jobs at its Zuffenhausen factory, near Stuttgart, the cash injection will be used to enlarge the plant to add a dedicated production line for electric motors and a larger body shop, the rest will be invested in R&D.
Chairman of Porsche’s executive board, Dr Oliver Blume, heralded the announcement that the decision to make the Mission E will be a “new chapter in the history of the sports car”.
Expect to become accustomed to the Mission E’s new design language - it’s said to tease the all-new replacement for the Panamera which is set to be revealed in 2016.
