Porsche will continue to offer petrol versions of its top-selling Macan well into the life span of mid-size SUV’s next generation.
The German sportscar marque confirmed the plans to retain petrol versions of the Macan in an official statement received by carsales this evening Australian time.
The statement was in response to our request following criticism of our story published earlier this week.
In the story, we correctly reported that although an EV version of the new Macan would be introduced, it would be sold alongside a petrol-engined version.
The story flew in the face of reporting globally.
The statement from Porsche AG reads (in full) as follows
“Our mission is clear: we want to drive into the future without emissions and play a technologically pioneering role.
“At the same time, we will remain flexible for a transitional period because the world regions will develop very differently with respect to electromobility.
“We will therefore initially continue to offer Macan models with combustion engine in parallel to the fully-electric variant.”
carsales believes Porsche’s strategy will see a near visually identical petrol Macan launched alongside the EV-enabled new generation car.
The petrol SUV will protect Porsche’s considerable Macan volume in EV-recalcitrant markets like the USA, South America, Russia and Australia.
Shifting Macan to a pure EV would have been a precedent. To date, no mainstream brand has relaunched an established internal combustion engine model as a pure EV.
