Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume has confirmed that a bigger, more luxurious SUV is on its way that will sit above its current Porsche Cayenne when it launches in the latter half of this decade.
Designed to cash in on the success of the battery-powered Porsche Taycan and three generations of Cayenne, the flagship SUV was confirmed by Blume at the Capital Markets Day held at the car-maker’s R&D centre in Weissach.
“We plan to add a new luxury, all-electric SUV model to our attractive portfolio, which will roll off the production line in Leipzig,” Blume said.
“This will further expand our position in the luxury automotive segment.
“We are targeting the higher margin segments in particular and aim to tap into new sales opportunities in this way.”
Blume reportedly went on to suggest the new flagship SUV was a “very sporty interpretation of an SUV”, suggesting a large coupe-style wagon.
Developed under the ‘K1’ codename, Porsche says the big SUV will borrow tech from the Porsche Mission R concept, suggesting it will gain a pair of 800kW electric motors and feature a 920-volt electrical architecture for ultra-fast charging.
Set to be based on a new Sport version of the Volkswagen Group Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), beneath the skin the K1 will share much with the next-gen Porsche Taycan and the third-generation Porsche Panamera sedan.
The same Sport variant of the SSP will underpin upcoming Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini models.
