Porsche Mission X successor could swap EV power for flat eight

Porsche is reportedly preparing a new flagship supercar inspired by its Mission X hypercar concept, but rather than using the EV powertrain previewed in 2023, the production car could debut a road-going flat-eight boxer engine. The rumoured model forms part of a broader strategy shift as Porsche refocuses on combustion-powered vehicles and high-margin, limited-production halo models.

Three years ago Porsche unveiled the Mission X, a dramatic battery-electric hypercar concept created to celebrate the company's 75th anniversary.

At the time, Porsche described Mission X as the spiritual successor to the 959, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. The concept showcased a 900-volt electric architecture, a carbon-fibre monocoque structure and ambitions to become the fastest road-legal vehicle around Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife.

While Porsche never formally approved the Mission X for production, fresh reports from Germany suggest its next halo model may emerge in a very different form.

According to Handelsblatt, Porsche chief executive Michael Leiters is preparing plans for a new range-topping supercar internally known as the S1. Rather than featuring the electric drivetrain envisioned for Mission X, the flagship is expected to launch with a newly developed flat-eight boxer engine.

If accurate, it would mark a significant milestone for Porsche. Although the company has produced flat-eight engines for motorsport applications, it has never sold a road-going production model powered by an eight-cylinder boxer.

The report arrives only months after German performance specialist RUF revealed a 4.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-eight producing more than 745kW and 1000Nm. There is currently no suggestion Porsche's engine is related to the RUF unit.

Styling details remain scarce, but the S1 is expected to share some visual DNA with Mission X. The concept featured dramatic proportions similar to the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, along with forward-opening Le Mans-style doors inspired by the legendary Porsche 917 race car.

When unveiling Mission X in 2023, then Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume described the concept as "a technology beacon for the sports car of the future" and an evolutionary successor to Porsche's most iconic halo models.

The apparent shift from an all-electric hypercar concept to a combustion-powered flagship reflects the changing market conditions Porsche faces today. Slowing EV demand and weaker sales in key markets have prompted a broader reassessment of the company's future product mix.

Reports suggest the new flagship could command a price of approximately €500,000, equivalent to around $A885,000 at current exchange rates, positioning it well above even the most expensive variants of the 911.

Porsche is expected to outline its updated business strategy during its capital markets day on October 7, where further details of the rumoured S1 project could emerge.

If approved for production, the model would become Porsche's first all-new hypercar since the 918 Spyder and could represent a dramatic departure from the Mission X concept that first promised an electric future.

Instead, Porsche may be preparing to celebrate its performance heritage with a new flagship powered by an engine architecture never before offered in one of its road cars.
