Porsche parade sets new world record

More than 1200 Porsche 911s gathered at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit the set a new world record this week.

The parade of 1208 vehicles was organised as part of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic sportscar, exceeding plans to collect 911 911s in the one place at the one time.

Of the most famous 911 models assembled on track were the Carrera, RS, RSR, GT, Speedster, Targa and Turbo variants, as well as a number of distinctive race and rally versions.

The spectacle was overseen by Mark Porsche, none other than the great-grandson of the marque’s founder Ferdinand ‘Butzi’ Porsche, and a number of the sportscar manufacturer’s best-known racing drivers.

They included Former F1 driver and five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell, winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours for Porsche in 1970 Richard Attwood, and other notable racers including John Fitzpatrick and David Piper.

Speaking at Silverstone, Mark Porsche spoke of his fondness for the 911 series in its golden anniversary year.

“Of course the 911 means a great deal to me as it’s my father’s big design and it will always have a special place in my heart,” opined Porsche.

“It’s a family member over all the generations of the 911 series and I'm very proud to be here today to represent the Porsche family at this great event.

“I think that to have these 1200 cars on track is the attention that the 911 deserves for its 50th birthday. I can’t thank the Porsche Club GB enough for making this event possible.”

Since its launch at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show the 911 has sold more than 820,000 units making it the most successful sportscar in the world.
