Is this mystery concept a Porsche Boxster EV?

Unnamed concept rumoured to be anything from a racer to all-new battery-powered roadster replacement

Porsche will unveil a new concept at the upcoming Munich motor show and has previewed the "future-oriented concept study" with a single image of its radical headlight cluster.

Featuring clear Porsche Taycan styling cues, which itself was inspired by the original Mission E concept, the German marque's latest work could point the way towards an all-new family of small pure-electric sports cars that will replace the Porsche Boxster and Cayman.

If that's true, it's tempting to draw parallels with the first-generation 986-series Boxster's 'fried egg' headlights that have been neatly updated for the digital age.

Set to be based on the Volkswagen Group's all-new PPE architecture that will also underpin the battery-powered Porsche Macan, the new electric Boxster and Cayman are likely to offer both rear- and all-wheel drive and a range of more than 500km.

Despite an increase in weight, performance is set to be in another league to the current sports car, while agility will be boosted by new torque vectoring tech.

That said, the caption clearly references the car-maker's heavy involvement in motorsport which has led others to suggest that what we're looking at is a race car and not anything road-legal, with the concept possibly previewing its entry into the Le Mans Daytona hybrid class (LMDh).

Whatever the case, fans of small, fast Porsches should be in for a treat at the beginning of next month as Porsche is hotly tipped to pull the drapes off an RS version of its Porsche Cayman GT4 that should feature more power, less weight and an extreme track-bred suspension set-up.
