Porsche's casting call for next GT3 superstar

Worldwide talent search begins, to find up-and-coming 911 GT3 racers

Australia and New Zealand are set to ignite their legendary sporting rivalry, this time on a different kind of race track to those seen at the London Olympics.

Porsche motorsport Germany has launched a worldwide talent search that will see one young hot shoe from its Carrera Cup Australia series represent the antipodes against drivers from the rest of the world.

Under the terms of the international competition only New Zealander Andre Heimgartner and 20-year old Australian Nick Foster (pictured) are eligible to represent the Australian conference, for a prize that’s been dubbed “the ultimate motorsport opportunity”.

The talented youngsters compete in the Porsche City Index Carrera Cup Australia championship, one of seven regional Carrera Cup championships from which drivers will be chosen.

The international young driver program will see either the Aussie or Kiwi race ace go up against drivers from Asia, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan and Scandinavia.

They’ll compete for a full-time drive in the 2013 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, a support category for the Formula 1 World Championship.

The eventual winner will receive a 2013 season’s budget in the signature one-make category, along with long-term training and support from Porsche’s junior drivers’ program.

Porsche will put a nominated driver from each region to the test later this year on a race track, under identical conditions, where they’ll be required to turn in fast lap times while also demonstrating the technical understanding and analytical skills to find a proper set-up for the 330kW 911 GT3 Cup racer.

Each nominated driver must be aged 26 or younger and compete full-time in their respective Porsche one-make series, leaving Kiwi Heimgartner and Aussie Foster as the only possible rivals from the Australian series.

The decision on who will represent the Australian championship will be made after the penultimate 2012 Carrera Cup round on the Gold Coast on October 21, 2012.
