Porsches now more expensive than ever

MY18 price hikes of up to $5600 take Macan, Cayenne, Boxster, Cayman and Panamera prices to all-time highs

When Porsche Cars Australia last month announced its MY18 model line-up including a power-up kit for the 911 Carrera S and "slight price adjustments across the Porsche range", it wasn't kidding.

In fact, with price hikes across the entire range – except the new Panamera Sport Turismo wagon and 911 GT3 racer-for-the-road – all but the 911 is now more expensive than ever.

Porsche's cheapest sports car, the 718 Cayman coupe, now starts at $115,600 plus on-road costs, while the closely related 718 Boxster roadster now opens at $118,400 plus ORCs, making both mid-engined models $5600 pricier than before.

Similarly, the 911 range now opens at $221,200, making it $4100 more than before, while the Panamera sedan is up by $5100 (now from $215,100).

The smallest price hikes are reserved for Porsche's volume-selling SUVs, with the new four-cylinder turbo-petrol Macan now opening the mid-size SUV range at $80,410 (up $3800) and the larger Cayenne now priced from $109,200 (up $1315).

In fact, with the exception of the 911, all Porsche models are now more expensive than they were before PCA axed up to $36,000 from some models as part of a range-wide price reduction in preparation for the Macan on June 1, 2013.

At that time, in response to sharper pricing from Porsche's rivals, base Cayenne pricing was cut to just $100,200, the entry-level Boxster was slashed to only $101,500 and the Cayman's starting price was reduced to $107,100.

Now with a base price of $221,200, only the 911 remains cheaper than it was pre-June 2013, when the starting price of the 991-series was axed from $229,400 to $206,500. That made it the cheapest 911 on sale in Australia since 2008, when the base 997-series 911 cost just $201,000.

Apart from small price reductions due to the higher luxury car tax threshold in July 2014, Porsche prices have risen steadily since 2013, including for its sports cars in June 2014 and the Cayenne in August 2014 and March 2016.

Porsche's Australian sales were up almost 8.5 per cent last year, but volume growth slowed to less than two per cent in the first three months of 2017.
