Power hike for two-door BMW 2 Series

Coupe and convertible variants score up-rated engines and added equipment

A revised 2 Series line-up is on the way and is expected to show up in local BMW showrooms from October.

Changes include new model names, reflecting the introduction of the new B48 series turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the entry-level 220i and 230i, plus the B58 turbo six for the M240i. The 230i replaces the previous 228i variants, and the 240i is the successor to the M235i. BMW Australia has pulled the plug on the slower-selling 220d.

The B48 engine brings a performance boost for both variants – 135kW and 270Nm for the 220i (5kW and 20Nm more), plus 185kW for the 230i (up 5kW) and 350Nm. Similarly, the M240i now generates 250kW and 500Nm, a 10kW and 50Nm advantage over the M235i. Marginally lower fuel consumption figures for the three drivetrain variants are 5.8L/100km for the 220i (6.1L/100km, convertible), 5.9L/100km for the 230i (6.2 for the convertible) and 7.1L/100km for the M240i (7.4 for the convertible).

All three models feature an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard, with a six-speed manual available as a no-cost option.

Prices have risen for the four-cylinder models, but the M240i is over $2000 lower than the M235i. Extra equipment in the 220i and 230i accounts for the price rise, with the 220i – now priced at $51,300 for the coupe and $58,300 for the convertible – gaining bi-xenon headlights, headlight washer system, exterior mirrors (with anti-dazzle, fold-in and auto parking functions), driving assistant, instrument cluster with extended contents and interior lights package.

The default trim level for the 230i is the formerly optional M Sport package, comprising M Sport brakes, M Rear spoiler (coupe only), 18-inch ‘461 M’ alloy wheels, exterior mirrors (with anti-dazzle, fold-in and auto parking functions), ‘Hexagon’ cloth/Alcantara upholstery (coupe), Dakota leather upholstery (convertible), Navigation System Professional, Comfort Access System, electric seat adjustment, Driving Assistant, premium instrument cluster and interior lights package.

This variant is also offered with the Luxury Line as a no-cost option. Previously costing extra as an option for the 228i, the Luxury line now includes a 12-speaker harman/kardon audio system and front-seat electrically-adjustable lumbar support.

As the flagship of the range, the M240i retains the features of the M235i, with the addition of adaptive headlights with selective beam, exterior mirrors (with anti-dazzle, fold-in and auto parking functions), 12-speaker harman/kardon Sound System, Comfort Access, electric seat adjustment, electric lumbar support, seat heating for driver and front passenger (coupe) and Driving Assistant.

Prices for the updated 2 Series range are as follows:
220i Coupe – $51,300*
220i Convertible – $58,300*
230i Coupe – $61,900*
230i Convertible – $71,900*
M240i Coupe – $74,900*
M240i Convertible – $83,900*
