Price hike for updated Mazda6; diesel dropped

Upgraded mid-size passenger car range will be exclusively petrol-powered

Mazda has released an updated Mazda6 that delivers improved driver-assist technology across the range and extra comfort features.

And the refreshed model has arrived just 12 months after the introduction of the turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engine to the range.

But with the latest upgrade comes yet another price increase across the board and the end of diesel variants in the range.

Sonia Singh, Senior Manager for Public Relations at Mazda Australia, has told carsales that the diesel variants of the widely acclaimed Mazda6 accounted for just 4.2 per cent of Mazda6 sales, making the case commercially unsustainable for the 2.2-litre compression-ignition engine.

"We are dropping the diesel; year to date it only accounted for 4.2 per cent of our sales of Mazda6," she said.

"We launched the 2.5 turbo-petrol engine on Mazda6 last year... [and] turbo-petrol [sales] account for 44.5 per cent... and the skew obviously is high-grade as well – really strong skew to [Mazda6] Atenza. We just weren't finding the diesel was of interest, really."

The on-going models have been lightly improved for 2019, with all models now offered with G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring. GVC is an enhancement of the previous G-Vectoring Control, now featuring yaw-moment control.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also rolled out across the range, and the audio system now pulls in FM radio signals through a secondary antenna for improved reception and sound. According to Mazda, this second antenna cancels out noise from the VHF signals being bounced off buildings and other solid objects. The flagship Mazda6 Atenza gains a heated steering wheel facility as standard.

The upgraded Mazda6 is on sale immediately. Prices have risen by $1000 for the Mazda6 Sport, Touring and GT trim levels, and by $1200 for the Mazda6 Atenza.

The new pricing is as follows:

Mazda6 Sport sedan – $34,490
Mazda6 Sport wagon – $35,790
Mazda6 Touring sedan – $38,690
Mazda6 Touring wagon – $39,990
Mazda6 GT (turbo) sedan – $45,990
Mazda6 GT (turbo) wagon – $47,290
Mazda6 Atenza (turbo) sedan – $49,890
Mazda6 Atenza (turbo) wagon – $51,190
