Price hikes for base MG4 and entire MG ZS EV range

Australia’s second-cheapest electric vehicle, the MG MG4 hatch, now has to share its title with the GWM Ora following a $1000 price increase that sees its starting figure rise to $39,990 plus on-road costs.

In an unusual move, the 2024 MG4 Excite 51kWh is the only member of its range to have gone up in price, with the remaining variants all staying put at their respective asking prices, which you can view below.

The same can’t be said for the MG ZS EV, which has had up to $2000 slapped onto every version offered in Australia, meaning the compact electric SUV now starts from $41,990 (+$1000) plus on-road costs in base Excite guise.

The mid-range Essence has also gone up $1000 to $44,990, whereas the flagship Essence Long Range has been bumped up to $51,990 – an increase of $2000.

MG Australia says the mark-ups on both models “are a result of different external factors such as a rise in raw material costs, shipping costs and currency fluctuations”, but stipulated that orders placed before January 1 would be price protected due to there being no specification changes.

It should be noted that these increases for the ZS EV come just a couple of months after MG slashed up to $6000 off the asking price of its first EV in November, which in turn came just a few months after another reduction to help the ICE-based model stay competitive in the rapidly evolving affordable EV market.

But while the retail prices have increased, so have the resulting drive-away prices, particularly in New South Wales since the state did away with its stamp duty exemption – and its $3000 purchase rebates – for EVs as of 2024.

MG offers drive-away pricing calculations on its local website, which shows a maximum drive-way price increase of up to $3700 for NSW ZS EV Essence Long Range buyers compared to a jump of up to $2132 in other states.
