Geely has signalled its intentions to rattle the cage of new and established competitors in the local market, with a sharp opening price gambit for its new Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV.
The five-door, five-seat Starray SUV – known much more interestingly as the Galaxy Starship 7 in its home market of China – has driven the price point of the medium PHEV SUV well under $40,000 for the first time. Until now, the title of most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV belonged to the BYD Sealion 6 (from $42,990 plus ORCs).
Geely has come out swinging with its first plug-in hybrid SUV, with the new Starray EM-i – set to sell alongside the similarly sized EX5 electric SUV – priced from just $37,490 before on-road costs.
And the base model 2025 Geely Starray EM-i Complete comes, err, complete with a solid specification that includes 18-inch rims, 264-bead LED headlights and 368-bead LED taillights, heated and powered front seats, a large 15.4-inch central screen and a 10.2-inch instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, auto climate and a six-speaker sound system.
The top-spec Inspire is priced at $39,990 before on-roads, and scores 19-inch rims, a huge panoramic sunroof, a large head-up display, wireless phone charging, 16-speaker audio system, powered tailgate, front parking sensors, LED ambient cabin lighting and a memory driver’s seat on top of the Complete’s offering.
Under the bonnet is Geely’s Super Hybrid system which combines large electric and small ICE power sources to move the front-wheel drive Starray.
Dual electric motors are housed inside the transmission adding 160kW to the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine’s 73kW.
That powertrain feeds back into an 18.4kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, which can be zapped from 30 to 80 per cent charge in a claimed 20 minutes via a 30kW DC charger. It’ll also provide around 83km of electric-only driving range, says the brand.
With a full tank of fuel and the battery topped up, Geely claims a total driving range of around 940km, along with a claimed combined fuel consumption of 2.4L per 100km.
Geely will offer a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty on the five-seat Starray, as well as an eight-year/unlimited kilometre battery warranty and up to seven years of complementary roadside assistance if servicing is completed at a Geely dealership.
Geely has sharpened the Starray’s appeal even further with free charging cables and premium paint thrown in for a limited time, as well as a $1000 ‘deposit rebate’ until the end of September.
Deliveries of both cars will start in October, according to the company.
