Mazda3 SKYACTIV-X mild-hybrid pricing announced

Radical mild-hybrid variant of popular small car due in August; CX-30 version to follow a month later

Mazda Australia has today revealed pricing for its Mazda3 X20 Astina and its small SUV counterpart, the Mazda CX-30 X20 Astina AWD.

The Mazda3, with its mild-hybrid technology underpinned by the innovative 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-X four-cylinder engine, will be priced from $40,590 and available in both manual and automatic variants, the latter costing $41,590.

Mazda Australia plans for the fuel-saving models to join the Mazda3 range from August.

A month later, the same powertrain will be introduced to the Mazda CX-30 range. This variant, the CX-30 X20 Astina AWD, will be priced at $46,490. These are the manufacturer’s retail list prices, before on-road costs.

Key to the fuel efficiency of the SKYACTIV-X powerplant is its combination of petrol and diesel operating characteristics, drawing upon a supercharger to deliver the thermal efficiency of diesels for mid-range torque while offering the high-revving performance of petrol engines.

In addition, the X20 Astina models feature mild-hybrid technology including a belt-driven integrated starter generator (ISG) and a 24-volt lithium-ion battery.

The battery powers the ISG to restart the engine instantly, and the ISG also recovers energy to store in the battery and supplements the output from the SKYACTIV-X engine for enhanced performance.

“Mazda is committed to reducing real-world emissions by looking at every part of a vehicle’s emissions footprint, from its production through to where the fuel that powers it comes from, and how a vehicle is disposed of at the end of its life,” said Mazda Australia managing director, Vinesh Bhindi.

“With every customer’s circumstances being unique, we need to offer a variety of ways to reduce vehicle emissions to suit individual needs and lifestyles. SKYACTIV-X offers customers a lower emission engine option, while retaining the same joy of driving that Mazda vehicles have always offered,” Bhindi was quoted as saying in a press release.

Mazda hasn’t revealed local fuel consumption figures for the Mazda3 with the SKYACTIV-X engine, but in WLTP testing the Mazda3 X20 Astina is rated at 5.4L/100km. It’s not low enough to have the Toyota Prius quaking in its boots, but it’s an impressive figure nonetheless, for a car that doesn’t run in an all-electric mode.
