Range Rover Evoque sold out for six months

Deliveries for city-slicker softroader pushed out to April and May 2012

The most unconventional yet most anticipated car of the year, the Range Rover Evoque, has caught its makers off guard – the company can’t build them fast enough. Indeed, with its Hot Wheels looks, the high-riding hatchback has a full order book, with the first 250 destined for Australia sold before they arrive.

“Order one today and you’re looking at April to May [2012] for delivery,” said Land Rover Australia brand manager Tim Krieger.

“The reaction to the car has just been phenomenal. This is the biggest launch we’ve had for Range Rover in Australia, even bigger than Range Rover Sport. We already have 10,000 expressions of interest on our data base, which is more than double what we had for Range Rover Sport.”

Most Evoque customers have never owned a Land Rover or Range Rover before, he said.

“At least 70 per cent of buyers are new to us,” said Krieger.

“When all supply constraints are removed then this will become our biggest volume seller. Global demand is so strong that customers throughout the world are having to wait to have their orders filled.

“We’re working closely with our parent company in the UK to get cars to customers as soon as possible. Given that Australia is a top 10 market for Land Rover globally, that puts us at the head of the queue.”

Most of the early orders are of the top-line models. The price for the Evoque starts at $55,000 – but the price can easily more than double to $115,000 once every option possible is included.

The average transaction price for the cars sold so far is about $75,000, the company says.

The starting price will dip to $49,990 for the two-wheel-drive model which is due in July next year.

The Evoque marks a number of firsts for the British brand: it’s the smallest, lightest, most fuel efficient Range Rover ever produced. It’s also the first with a space-saver spare tyre (even though it has above average off-road ability).

Although it has only been on sale for two months in Europe, the Evoque has already picked up a number of awards from motoring and non-motoring magazines alike, including industry journal Auto Express and lifestyle and gadgets magazine
