Recall wrap: Fire risk for almost 37,000 Isuzu D-MAX utes

Renault Master could also catch alight, plus a stalling issue for the D-MAX, MU-X, Mazda BT-50 and several key Genesis models

Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) is calling back close to 37,000 examples of its D-MAX pick-up truck over concerns an incorrectly installed part could result in a vehicle fire.

A total of 36,966 examples of the pre-facelift D-MAX are involved in the nationwide recall, covering all variants built between 2020-2023.

According to the safety notice, the fuel delivery hose may have been incorrectly installed and could make contact with the engine oil level gauge bracket, leading to premature wear.

“Fuel may leak from a damaged hose and, in the presence of an external ignition source, result in a vehicle fire,” the car-maker said.

It comes in the wake of a near identical recall issued late last year over the same issue, with Mazda issuing its own notice for the mechanically identical BT-50.

Affected owners will be contacted by IUA to schedule an appointment to have the fuel hose inspected and repaired, free of charge, with a full list of affected VINs attached to the recall notice.

An ongoing fire risk isn’t IUA’s only ongoing recall however – more than 149,000 D-MAXs and MU-Xs produced between 2020 and 2024 have been summoned back by the brand for a software issue which could see them splutter to a halt.

According to the recall notice, the engine control module may incorrectly reduce the engine speed and cause it to stall, significantly increasing the risk of an accident.

As above, the list of affected VINs has been attached to the recall notice.

Mazda Australia has issued its own separate recall for 55,738 BT-50s, again produced between 2020-2024, however the Zoom Zoom brand has attributed the fault to a manufacturing defect.

“Due to a manufacturing defect in the engine control module, the fuel pump control valve may remain ‘open’ and fuel supply may be interrupted,” the brand said.

“If this occurs, the engine could stall resulting in a loss of power.”

As per the IUA notices, the affected VIN list is attached to the recall notice online.

Affected owners of all three models will be contacted by the brands and asked to present their vehicle(s) for a free inspection and repair.

Hyundai’s luxury marque Genesis has also run into some stalling issues.

The South Korean car-maker is calling back 787 vehicles across its G80 sedan, GV70 medium SUV and GV80 large SUV – all built between 2021-2022 – to address a potentially defective fuel pump.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the fuel pump impeller may become deformed under certain environmental conditions, interrupting the fuel supply,” the brand said via the recall notice.

“If this occurs, the engine could stall resulting in a sudden loss of motive power.”

Potentially affected owners can download the full list of affected VINs via the spreadsheet attached to the notice, however Genesis says it will also be contacting affected owners in writing.

In other news, 600 examples of the Renault Master van (built between 2014-2023) are at risk of spontaneously combusting.

According to Renault Australia’s most recent recall notice, the fuel delivery pipe may become damaged due to contact with an engine wiring harness and spring a leak, potentially igniting a vehicle fire if the fuel meets an ignition source.

Drivers and passengers are being warned to monitor for a fuel odour when driving and/or fueling the vehicle, however the full list of affected VINs is available online.
