RECALL WRAP: Mazda Australia issues recall notice for 18,000 cars

Mazda Australia has announced a recall of its most popular models in Australia over concerns about a potential powertrain module fault.

According to a notice issued with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission this morning, the software controlling the engine’s cylinder deactivation function might not operate properly, causing an intake valve rocker arm to move out of positon, putting it at risk of contact with other internal engine parts.

The Mazda3, Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5 are all included in the recall. In total, there are 18,719 vehicles swept up in the campaign.

Mazda will contact affected owners for a free fix at their nearest dealer. The full VIN list is attached here.

Still with Mazda, the Japanese marque has issued a separate recall of 256 MX-5s for a metal bracket which may detach from the vehicle while driving.

Affecting Model Year 2015 MX-5s (VIN list here), Mazda says the bracket may fall from the vehicle, increasing the risk of accident or injury to vehicle occupants or other road users.

Mazda will contact owners of affected vehicles and fix the problem at no charge.

Over at Porsche, the German car-maker has recalled 2632 examples of its Cayenne SUV, built between 2003 and 2010, and Panamera wagon, built between 2009 and 2016, over a potentially faulty gear lever.

“The plastic sleeve of the selector lever cable may not be durable throughout the service life of the vehicle. If the plastic sleeve breaks, the transmission may not change into park mode when the driver shifts the vehicle into park,” the recall campaign from Porsche Australia said.

If the car’s transmission is not in park mode and the parking brake is not applied, Porsche says the vehicle may intentionally roll off.

Finally, Lamborghini has issued a recall notice for its new Urus SUV – of all things, for improper labelling.

Eighty-three examples of the $400,000-plus high-rider have been included in the recall, where “the vehicle's sun visor does not have the required labelling advising consumers not to install rearward-facing child restraints in the front seat of the vehicle, and the owner's manual is missing the reference to this sun visor label”.

Due to the insufficient labelling, consumers “may install a rearward-facing child restraint in their front seat”. Lamborghini will contact affected owners for a replacement of the sun visor and owner manual, free of charge.
