Recall wrap: Porsche, Audi and Ford cars recalled

Porsche Panamera, Audi A6 and A7 and Ford Escape models called back to the workshop for various issues

Porsche Panamera vehicles produced between 2015 and 2021 are among a range of models hit with national product safety recalls this week.

Involving 243 vehicles, the issue impacting the Porsche sports-luxury sedan relates to moisture potentially leaking into the additional coolant pump’s control unit.

As described in the recall notice, this could cause an electrical short circuit and result in a vehicle fire.

Owners of affected Panamera cars are urged not to press the AUTO REST button on the centre console until the replacement pump has been fitted by an authorised Porsche Centre.

They are also being asked to temporarily park their Panamera outdoors “a sufficient distance away from other vehicles and buildings to minimise any possible risk to persons as well as the surrounding area”.

An inspection and repair of the vehicle will be carried out free of charge, once booked in via a Porsche Centre.

If immediate assistance is required outside business hours, owners can ring Porsche Cars Australia’s call centre on 1800 659 911.

Owners of affected vehicles can contact their preferred Porsche Centre to arrange an inspection and repair of their vehicle, free of charge.

Audi A6 and A7

Audi A6 and A7 luxury cars built between 2018 and 2022 are also subject to a safety recall, in this case due to the possibility of an accident stemming from restricted vehicle functions.

Impacting 1204 cars across all model variants in the specified period, the Audi A6/A7 recall is related to the position of the electronic control unit and its potential to fail if liquid is spilt on the rear bench seat.

If the ECU fails, a variety of vehicle functions might become restricted (indicated by warning messages in the instrument cluster). These include:

  • Engine – Enters emergency running mode and continues running with reduced performance.
  • Automatic transmission – Gearbox interrupts the power flow in the drivetrain.
  • Steering – Steering assistance is reduced in stages; it could be necessary to use more force to turn the steering wheel as the vehicle slows down.

Audi makes it clear that “a failure of the ‘gateway control unit’ will increase the risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders”.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Audi Australia to arrange with their nearest authorised dealership to have the work carried out free of charge.

Ford Escape

Ford Escape

If you have a panoramic glass roof fitted to your 2021 Ford Escape, you’ll want to take a close look at this recall.

There are 186 cars identified under the notice and all of them should be returned by their owners to an authorised Ford dealership for inspection and repair, free of charge.

That’s because the panoramic roof may have poor adhesion of both the fixed glass panel and the front roof panel to the Escape’s roof frame, which could in turn see the panels detach from the vehicle when on the move.

A manufacturing defect is being blamed for the problem, which could lead to an injury or death to road users if a panel breaks free.

Affected owners can expect Ford to contact them to organise a time to take their Escape back into the workshop.

They can also contact their local dealer direct or Ford’s call centre on 133 673.
