Recall wrap: Tesla Model 3 strikes another ADR breach

But Tesla Model 3’s latest seatbelt-related compliance issue can be cured by an over-the-air software update

Hundreds of Tesla Model 3 sedans have today become involved in yet another Australian Design Rule (ADR) compliance breach.

The nationwide product safety recall of 331 Tesla Model 3s affects some of the first vehicles to arrive Down Under, including all sedans built between 2019 and 2020 with model codes E6LRB, E5LDB, E5LDP and E3LDP.

While the previous Model 3 recall was due to a hidden rear child-seat anchor, the latest problem is related to a potentially faulty driver’s seatbelt reminder warning.

“Due to an issue with driver seat occupancy switch, the instrument cluster may fail to illuminate the visual and audible seat belt warnings in certain conditions as required by the Australian Design Rules (ADR),” said Tesla in its recall notice.

“If the driver is not made aware of an unfastened seatbelt, there is an increased risk of injury or death in case the vehicle is involved in an accident. The vehicle may not be compliant with ADR 04/06 – Seatbelts.”

An over-the-air (OTA) vehicle software update is being rolled out for the owners of affected vehicle, who can fix the issue without visiting a Tesla service centre.

You can check if your vehicle identification number (VIN) is included in the full list of affected vehicles here.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Meanwhile today, 88 examples of the previous-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class are being called back to workshop due to the potential for vehicle fires.

According to Mercedes-Benz, only vehicles built between 2021 and 2022 are affected – not the fifth-generation (W206) C-Class that arrived in Australia in 2022, which has now attracted four recalls.

“Due to a manufacturing issue, a retaining screw between the vehicle’s electrical wiring and the fuse box located in the front passenger footwell may not have been tightened sufficiently,” said Mercedes-Benz in its recall notice.

“As a result, the vehicle may experience a loss of propulsion whilst driving. In addition, electrical resistance in the wiring could increase, resulting in a vehicle fire.”

Owners of affected vehicles – see the full VIN list attached to the recall notice – are asked to contact their local Mercedes-Benz retailer to have the work carried out as soon as possible.
