Renault rebrands with new retro badge

Refreshed diamond logo pays tribute to 1970s branding and will feature on all models by 2024

Renault has unveiled a new logo that's claimed to draw inspiration from its 122 years of car-making and which all models will wear from 2024.

Previewed earlier this year on the Renault 5 Prototype – the small retro-styled pure-electric hatch that's heading to production in 2025 – the simple new badge looks closest to the diamond logo that was introduced back in 1972 and only phased-out in 1992.

Revealing the new logo online, Renault design boss Giles Vidal said the Renault 5 Prototype was used to gauge feedback from customers and was only green-lit after receiving "very positive feedback".

Vidal also explained the reasoning behind the latest logo.

"The diamond is one of the most recognised shapes in the world, and in the world of the automobile," he said.

"It is a simple geometric shape, with a strong, powerful identity.

"The challenge was to renew this shape by giving it meaning, along with new, contemporary values to project the brand into the future."

Since the French car-maker was founded in 1898, Renault has had just nine different logos.

The basic 2D logo was chosen over the current 3D branding as it displays better in digital form, an essential part of Renault's current marketing strategy.

Renault has yet to confirm the first vehicle to wear its new badge, but the pure-electric Renault Megane crossover is hotly tipped to officially introduce the new retro logo when it arrives in early 2022.
