Renault reveals Scenic XMOD

The Scenic XMOD also makes its first public appearance at the Geneva show, with European sales set to commence in May, but there are as yet no plans to offer the vehicle in our market.
The compact crossover replaces the existing Scenic MPV, adding a dash of rugged off-roader pretensions with black plastic lower-body cladding on its nose, flanks and rump. However, the seven-seater Grand Scenic is not being discontinued, although it gains a facelift that brings it in line with the look of the Scenic XMOD.
In addition to its plastic cladding, the Scenic XMOD also sports a mildly jacked-up ride height, new alloy wheels and roof rails to give it a more purposeful stance than the mumsy Scenic MPV it replaces.
Don’t expect mud-mauling off-road ability though, because the vehicle is offered solely in front-wheel-drive format (unlike the Scenic RX4 sold from 2000-03), albeit boosted by a new ‘Grip Xtend’ traction control system that allows the driver to choose between three traction control settings, including one set up specifically for loose surfaces.
The interior has also been jazzed up vis-à-vis the outgoing Scenic, as Euro-spec cars get an R-link infotainment system that debuted in the new Clio 4. Also available are a flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminium pedals and a premium Bose stereo.
Boot capacity has also swelled slightly, growing from 522 litres in the old Scenic to 555 litres.
The Scenic XMOD will be offered in Europe with a choice of three powertrains, including an improved TCe 130 petrol unit with stop/start that’s claimed to trim fuel consumption by 15 per cent compared with the old engine.
