FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: Revamped Volkswagen I.D. Crozz teased

German car-maker to reboot Shanghai concept as the pure-electric SUV edges closer to reality

Volkswagen has confirmed it will use next week's Frankfurt motor show to reveal an updated version of the I.D. Crozz concept it originally revealed back at the Shanghai motor show in April.

Claimed to be closer to the 'real' production version, the German Tesla Model X rival that will be revealed is said to lose some of the original concept's details and feature new headlights and a roof finished in gloss black.

Inside, the original concept's lounge-style interior carries over thanks to the flat floor that's created by cleverly packaging the lithium-ion battery cells.

It's not been confirmed for the latest car but it's though the Crozz could keep the Shanghai car's 225kW combined power output and its 83kWh battery -- enough to launch the pure-electric SUV to 100km/h in less than six seconds.

The range, too, should remain pegged at around 500km.

Based on the Volkswagen Group's new dedicated EV platform dubbed MEB, the Crozz is claimed to come with a neat optimum 48/52 front/rear weight distribution that could provide for "GTI-like handling" -- that's if you choose to drive at all.

The I.D. Crozz will also come with full Level 3 autonomy, allowing the car to take over the driving duties for extended periods.

Volkswagen is expected to reveal more of the updated I.D. Crozz, which is set to be on sale in Europe by 2020, as we lead up to its official unveil on September 12.
