Road deaths surge in NSW and Vic

The number of national road fatalities dropped in February 2014 but figures have spiked in Australia's two most populous states

The latest Road Deaths Australia report from the Federal Government’s Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development shows a total of 92 road deaths were recorded on Australian roads in February 2014. That number represents a drop of 9.8 per cent from the average figure for the month over the past five years.

In the 12 months to the end of February 2014 a total of 1188 road deaths were recorded, a drop of 8.4 per cent from the 12-month period to the end of February 2013. The rate of annual deaths per 100,000 people stands at 5.1 – a 10 per cent reduction from the figure taken at the end of February 2013.

While that’s all good news, more recent figures show road fatalities in New South Wales and Victoria are soaring. As of March 17, 76 fatalities had been recorded in New South Wales, the figure up 31 per cent from the same time last year, while in Victoria a total of 57 fatalities had been recorded – a rise of 23.9 per cent.

In the other more populous states, South Australia’s figure of 22 recorded fatalities is unchanged from this time last year, while Queensland’s 42 fatalities represent a drop of 35.4 per cent.

Western Australia has followed Queensland’s lead, the 27 fatalities recorded in that state representing a drop of 22.9 per cent.
