Roman holiday for Citroen owners
Thousands of Citroens converge on the Italian capital to take part in a celebration of the French marqueEvery four years, Citroen enthusiasts make some foreign port their own. In 2008, the French car fans chose to "do as the Romans do", setting up at the Vallelunga race track, 32km to the north of Rome.
16,000 spectators fronted up to watch as 2457 Citroen cars circulated the track and inspect a further 1500 cars in a static display. Many of those 16,000 spectators brought along their own Citroens, with organisers estimating 6000 cars not officially taking part in the proceedings.
Participants drove their cars through Rome and the company arranged for prototypes and factory motor sport cars to appear on display also. The most popular model was the Citroen DS, which accounted for 678 units. There were also 522 units of the 2CV and 334 of the Traction Avant.
Close to a thousand participants hailed from France, with nearly 900 from Italy. There were even a few visitors from Australia. Citroen enthusiasts will gather again in four years' time in the Yorkshire town of Pickering.
