Ford Australia is expanding its Transit Custom van range with the reveal of the new 2025 Ford Transit Custom Trail, a rugged all-wheel drive variant that will launch locally in a single Long Wheelbase specification priced from $61,990 plus on-road costs.
Due to arrive in Australia in the final quarter of 2025 – think November – the Transit Custom Trail builds on the existing lineup which includes the Trend, Sport, and Double Cab variants - which resulted in the Transit's best sales year on record in 2024.
The new Trail variant is designed to appeal to both tradies and weekend adventurers seeking a more capable van with its all-paw traction, a tougher visual presence, and a variety of interior enhancements.
This rugged new van is unlikely to replace the dual-cab ute as the go-to all-rounder for adventurous types, but the added security a van body style brings could see some ute owners jump ship.
Power comes from the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine found in the rest of the diesel-powered Transit Custom range, delivering 125kW and 390Nm through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Unlike its front-wheel drive stablemates, the Transit Custom Trail gets an active AWD system, which means it not only responds to wheel slip between the front and rear axles but also can anticipate wheel slip, and transfer torque to the rear wheels before slip occurs.
The electronically controlled clutch in the rear axle can provide traction like a locked 4x4 system without binding in turns.
Although it's based on the Transit Custom Trend, visually the Trail stands apart from the rest of the Transit Custom range thanks to a a unique grille and skid plates, black wheel arch mouldings and side strips, silver-painted rocker trim, underbody protection and bold yellow decals.
It rides on unique 16-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels finished in matte black, and comes with LED headlamps and daytime running lights are standard.
Inside, the cabin features artificial leather upholstery with distinctive yellow stitching across the three-seat layout and a Trail-embossed driver’s seat. A dual passenger seat is standard, though buyers can option a single front passenger seat for $150.
Standard paint is Frozen White, while four prestige colours – Agate Black, Grey Matter, Magnetic, and Moondust Silver – are available for $700 extra.
Other options include a rear liftgate ($700) and dual side load doors ($1000).
The Transit Custom Trail retains the full suite of active safety and driver assistance features seen in other variants, including those that helped the model achieve a top “Platinum” rating under ANCAP’s latest commercial van safety assessment protocol, scoring 96 per cent overall.
“The Ford Transit Custom Trail offers a blend of striking design, comfort, versatility, and capability that makes it an excellent choice for both business and recreational use,” said Anna Hercan, Ford Australia Product & Retail Marketing Manager – Vans.
Full specifications will be confirmed closer to launch, with first examples of the MY25.75 Transit Custom Trail expected to arrive in Aussie showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2025.
