Rugged seven-seat Dacia Jogger wagon makes debut

Romanian brand’s new cut-price MPV gets rugged looks and hybrid power but no AWD option yet

The all-new 2022 Dacia Jogger has been revealed ahead of its official debut at the Munich motor show.

Claimed to blend the practicality of a wagon, the spaciousness of a people-mover and the go-anywhere looks of a butch SUV, the Dacia Jogger is also set to be Europe's cheapest seven-seater when it arrives in November as it's set to be priced from just €15,000 ($A24,000).

Based on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance's latest CMF-B platform that underpins both the current Renault Clio and Nissan JUKE, the new Dacia Jogger gets a jacked-up ride height that provides up to 200mm of ground clearance, plus faux SUV styling to give the impression it's more than a high-riding wagon.

Measuring in at more than 4500mm long, the new Dacia is the car-maker's biggest model but is still around 50mm shorter than a Mazda CX-5. But thanks to the Jogger's generous 2900mm wheelbase (200mm longer than the Mazda), it can accommodate a third row of seating.

Headroom in the second and third row, meanwhile, has been boosted by a 40mm step-up in the roofline.

Inside, there's plenty of practical touches that include folding picnic tables, while boot space is 213 litres with all seven seats in place, 712L in five-seat mode and up to 1819L with the two rear rows removed.

Under the bonnet there's an 81kW/200Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. This will be joined next year by a hybrid that lifts its powertrain from the Renault Clio E-Tech hybrid and blends a 1.6-litre petrol with a small 1.2kWh battery.

To get the full SUV look, buyers will need to specify the range-topping Extreme model grade that comes with extra black plastic body cladding, as well as rugged front and rear bash plates.

Inside, mid- and high spec Dacia Jogger models come with an 8.0-inch infotainment screen that manages both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Already confirmed for right-hand drive markets like the UK, it's feasible the new Dacia Jogger could be destined for Australia after it launches here in the first quarter of 2022.

That said, it's more likely the local Renault importer, Ateco Group, will focus its resources on importing and marketing the new Dacia Sandero hatch, Sandero Stepway SUV, Duster SUV and the pint-sized Oroch dual-cab ute.

Following on from the Jogger's 2022 debut, the Romanian car-maker has announced it will launch another larger 4.6-metre-long SUV in late 2024 or early 2025 that will also draw cues from last year's Bigster concept.
