Rugged Skoda Kamiq Scoutline surfaces

Rough and ready small Czech SUV gains protective black plastic cladding but no all-wheel drive hardware

Following in the tyre tracks of the flagship Monte Carlo version, a new Skoda Kamiq Scoutline has been launched to broaden the small entry-level SUV's appeal.

Boasting matt-black plastic wheel-arch liners, silver bodywork highlights and 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, the more rugged version of the pint-size Skoda Kamiq gets full rough-road protection beneath.

Skoda says this involves full underbody amour and, curiously, a front spoiler and rear diffuser.

Skoda doesn't explain why the extra aero aids are needed off-road, but a silver finish for the side sills, exterior mirror caps and roof-rails, plus rear tinted windows, complete the Scoutline trim upgrades.

Inside, opt for the mud-loving Skoda SUV and you get the choice of a standard ash-wood effect trim or an optional dark finish combined with a chrome finish.

The rough and ready Skoda even introduces a special seat material that's claimed to be 'breathable', while the steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake are all wrapped in leather.

White, red or orange LED ambient lighting, LED reading lights and an optional black headliner complete the changes.

What's missing is an extra pair of driven wheels as the Kamiq lacks all-wheel drive hardware. Despite its off-roader looks, the little Skoda remains strictly front-wheel drive.

Under the bonnet the Scoutline will be offered in Europe with the Kamiq's full engine range, which like the larger $29,990 Karoq 2WD could be limited in Australia to a 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder combined with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The new Skoda Kamiq Scoutline is set to make its debut this March at the Geneva motor show but it's not yet known whether it will be offered in Australia, where the all-new Kamiq range will be launched in July.
