Safety updates for 2020 Hyundai Tucson

Popular mid-size SUV gets AEB as standard across the range – almost, for a price

Hyundai has added more safety equipment to its updated 2020 Tucson range, but some models still miss out on autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and the cheapest variants are now about $1000 more expensive.

When the facelifted MY19 Hyundai Tucson was launched last August, new features included autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as standard for the two most expensive model grades – Elite and Highlander – but auto-braking remained optional for automatic versions of the entry-level Go and Active X variants and unavailable for manual versions.

Now, as part of a MY20 upgrade for its popular mid-size SUV, AEB is now standard on all models – except manual versions of the Go (which now reverts to its former Active name) and Active X variants.

The cheapest Hyundai Tucson models still get the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating as all other models, because the medium SUV was crash tested in 2015, but would not if it was tested as of 2018.

As well, prices are up for both models (by $1140 for Active variants and $940 for Active X variants) and both models lack the more advanced AEB system fitted to more expensive models.

The four-grade MY20 Hyundai Tucson range now spans the Active (from $29,290 plus ORC’s), Active X (from $32,290 plus), Elite (from $37,850 plus) and range-topping Highlander (from $46,500 plus).

The same four-cylinder drivetrain packages carry over to the 2020 range, including a 2.0-litre GDi petrol engine with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions in front- and all-wheel drive form, a 1.6-litre T-GDi turbo-petrol with seven-speed dual-clutch auto, and a 2.0-litre CDRi turbo-diesel with eight-speed auto (both AWD-only).

Apart from the SmartSense safety suite that was previously optional on MY19 auto models, Active variants add more equipment than the Go variants they replace, including 17-inch alloy wheels, rear park assist, auto up/down for the driver’s window, lane keeping assist and driver attention warning.

Meantime, Active X models get larger 18-inch alloy wheels, but now miss out on tyre pressure monitoring.

Every variant also gets Hyundai’s SmartSense safety suite with forward collision avoidance assist (FCA) and forward collision warning (FCW), but there are two types of systems – camera-based for the Tucson Active and Active X, and a more advanced camera and radar system for Elite and Highlander models.

Forward collision avoidance on Active and Active X models works between speeds of 8km/h-65km/h, bringing the car to a complete stop if another vehicle is detected ahead -- but it does not detect pedestrians or cyclists.

That technology is reserved for Elite and Highlander grades, in which the camera and radar sensors can detect pedestrians and cyclists between 10km/h-70km/h and other vehicles between 10km/h-180km/h.

Premium paint is available on all models for an extra $595 and a beige interior is available ($295) for all but the base Active.
