SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: Geely reveals BMW 3 Series fighter

Geely’s Emgrand shows off its sharp-suited take on a small premium sedan

Audi, BMW and Mercedes will face a new Chinese rival in the shape of the Geely Emgrand sedan if the car-maker chooses to push its new sport sedan into production.

Created by ex-Ford and Volvo designer, Peter Horbury, the new Emgrand is the first car designed by the Geely’s new British design chief.

Said to be inspired by Shanghai’s skyscrapers and the West Lake Bridge in Hangzhou the Emgrand is expected to sit on Volvo’s state-of-the-art Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), the production Geely is also thought to be set to share the newly developed Swedish firm’s Drive-E range of engines.

The SPA underpinnings have also been created to package the Volvo’s new plug-in hybrid tech and the Emgrand will almost certainly be offered with the new hybrid powertrain from launch.

Geely hasn’t announced when production will begin for its new sedan or, indeed, if it plans to export in to Europe but former Wheels journalist and one of the founding fathers of the original Mazda MX-5 Miata, Bob Hall, is thought to have been a consultant on the project and said in a recent interview with Peter Robinson that he thought it could take “300,000 sales a year”.

Expect more information to be drip fed over the next few months.
