The new Skoda Kamiq has plunged into the hotly-contested small SUV pool with two trim variants and one powertrain variant: a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels.
Priced from $36,990 plus on-road costs, the range comprises Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo and, for the foreseeable future, a Kamiq 110TSI Limited Edition (LE).
Let’s have a closer look at Skoda’s latest offering to discover what you get for your money.
The Kamiq now comes with the following standard equipment:
• 18-inch alloy wheels
• Full LED headlights with animated indicators
• Privacy glass
• Umbrella in driver’s door
• 8.0-inch infotainment touch-screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Rear-view camera with parking sensors
• Adaptive cruise control
• Virtual cockpit digital dash
• Dual-zone climate control with humidity sensor
• Powered tailgate
Metallic and pearl-finish paint selections incur a $550 surcharge, premium paint costs $1100 and a sunroof for the Skoda Kamiq 110TSI Limited Edition is $1300.
A tow bar adds $1200 more to the price of the Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo and LE variants.
Exclusive to the Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo is the $4300 Travel pack with auto parking, side blind spot detection, premium audio, heated front and rear seats, a 9.2-inch screen with satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and flappy gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
If your budget only stretches to the entry-model Skoda Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo you’ll have peace of mind anyway, thanks to an enormous range of standard safety and driver assist technologies.
These include city emergency brake assist, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control systems, hill hold assist, anti-slip regulator, an electric diff lock, hydraulic brake assist, driver steering assist, rain braking system for optimal stopping on wet surfaces and lane keep assist.
Also keeping you safe and sound is the multi-collision braking facility that mitigates additional accident damage. Plus, there’s a rear camera and rear parking sensors and manoeuvre brake assist, seven airbags and driver fatigue detection.
But wait, there’s more! Also standard are adaptive LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming interior mirror and door mirrors, tyre pressure monitoring, emergency flashing brake lights, and hazard lights that activate on impact. Adaptive cruise control that ebbs and flows with the traffic speed is also standard.
Another step up to the Kamiq 110TSI LE variant gains you blind spot detection and rear traffic alert.
Do you want to enjoy hassle-free parking? Then the Kamiq 110TSI LE with its self-parking is the one for you.
Both Kamiq variants carry a five-star ANCAP safety rating, based on European testing conducted in 2019.
The Skoda Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo comes with an 8.0-inch high-res infotainment screen featuring Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, phone connectivity, music streaming and four USB ports.
If you want satellite navigation, head to the Kamiq 110TSI LE and its larger 9.2-inch screen that also delivers wireless Apple CarPlay or tick it as option pack on the entry model.
To keep your Kamiq warm in winter and cool in summer, privacy glass and dual-zone climate control are standard across the range.
Want the extra light afforded by a sunroof? Then order the Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo that brings with it premium cloth trim, black roof lining and sports pedals.
Should you want to add more spice to your driving, stay with the 110TSI Monte Carlo as it has sport chassis control and selectable drive modes.
What about the rich look and feel of leather trim? Head over to the 110TSI LE that combines leather with a suede-like material.
While both Kamiq variants have a sports steering wheel, only the LE tiller has flappy gearshift paddles and leather-bound rim.
Enriching the interior are dash inserts with copper-colour air vent frames and, for added comfort, the driver’s seat is power-adjusted and both rows offer heated seats.
LEDs for the daytime running lights, front and rear fog lights and brake lights are included across the range. LED headlights are fitted also, with an adaptive front lighting system (AFS).
A means of differentiating the two models is the grille, with the Kamiq LE wearing a chrome grille frame in lieu of the sportier black frame of the Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo. The Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo features black window frames, and the Kamiq LE boasts chrome surrounds.
Adding to the distinctive sporty air of the Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo are the black rear diffuser, black door mirrors and black Skoda badging on the tailgate.
Both variants roll on 18-inch alloy wheels with the Kamiq LE running the crater style and the 110TSI Monte Carlo fitted with Vega-style wheels in black.
Since the entry-level Skoda Kamiq variant being dropped from the range, the sole powertrain choice for the Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo and 110TSI Limited Edition variants is the 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, bolted to the seven-speed DSG (dual-clutch) transmission.
There’s no doubt the Skoda Kamiq LE is chock full of tech, comfort and safety features – until stocks run out.
For me, however, the lure of the sportier Kamiq 110TSI Monte Carlo cannot be ignored.
