Skoda has delivered on its promise, bringing a new petrol variant of the Yeti SUV to market. The Yeti 112TSI is underpinned by the same, Haldex all-wheel drive running gear as found in the diesel 103TDI variants. But the new petrol variant (available with either a six-speed manual or optional six-speed DSG transmission), offers some saving on the purchase price.
It's not in the same sub-$30K bracket as the front-drive Yeti 77TSI, but at $32,990, it starts out nearly $3000 cheaper ($2700 less) than the diesel with manual. Even adding the DSG option, ($35,290) the price of the petrol, all-paw model remains $400 below the diesel model with manual transmission.
The new engine, which is turbocharged and direct-injected, develops 112kW at 6000rpm (coupled with the DSG box) and 250Nm between 1500 and 4200rpm. When the manual transmission is specified, the engine's power is rated at 118kW and the torque peak remains at 250Nm a little bit higher up in the rev range — at 4500rpm. Combined-cycle fuel consumption figures for the Yeti with the 112TSI engine are 8.4L/100km for the manual and 8.2L/100km with the DSG.
The new Yeti variants are equipped in keeping with the diesel versions, meaning they come with 17-inch alloys (with a 16-inch steel spare), auto-on/off headlights with follow-me-home function, front foglights, chrome trim for gearlever/plinth/handbrake button, 2DIN six-disc CD audio system with MP3 compatibility, warning lights in front doors, underbody protection, dual-zone climate control and rain-sensing wipers. In addition the new Yeti models are packaged with silver roof rails, height-adjustable front seats with lumbar support, sunglass storage, storage compartment under front passenger's seat, chilled/illuminated glovebox and tie-down eyes/adjustable hooks in the luggage compartment.
