Skoda Roadiaq concept elevates Enyaq from SUV to tourer

Latest student creation transforms Skoda’s inaugural EV into a versatile mobile office that’s also perfect for campsites

Skoda has debuted its latest (ninth) Student Car concept vehicle, the 2023 Skoda Roadiaq – a factory-built camper based on the Czech brand’s first EV, the Skoda Enyaq electric SUV.

Conceptualised and created by Skoda Academy apprentices with the help of various mentors from the Volkswagen-owned car-maker, the Roadiaq embodies Skoda’s motto of ‘let’s explore’ by converting the brand’s flagship electric SUV into a soft-roading overland rig.

Increased ground clearance of 190mm improves versatility and the wheelbase has grown to 2770mm in order to better manage the extra weight and higher centre of gravity due to the raised roof.

Arguably the defining feature of the Rodiaq beyond its two-tone Moon White and Emerald Green paint finish, the raised roof and new tailgate were designed to liberate more room in the accommodation zone, which is equipped with everything the discerning off-gridder might need and can be used as a mobile office, kitchen or sleeping quarters.

A redesigned left rear door and corresponding trim free up room for the integrated single bed, while the window has been given a screen to ensure maximum privacy and adjustable light exposure.

The tailgate was modified to allow for the attachment of a tent and other collapsible shelters, extending the living quarters outside the confines of the vehicle’s body – perfect for cooking in bad weather.

A key contributor to the space on hand is the Roadiaq’s Enyaq roots. The SUV’s battery-electric drivetrain and its packaging means the floor is completely flat, eliminating trip hazards and storage compromises.

Amenities include a fully equipped kitchenette, single bed, plenty of ‘Simply Clever’ storage, a 27-inch TV, mobile connectivity, wireless keyboard, shower, coffee machine, folding table and chairs, sustainably sourced upholstery, sky lights, solar panels and an arm-mounted tablet holder in the front.

No changes have been made to any of the Enyaq’s mechanical make-up, which means it retains its 195kW/425Nm dual-motor powertrain and 82kWh battery pack. But while no official figure is given it’s fair to say the Roadiaq’s extra weight and drag will impact driving range.

The creation was praised by some of Skoda’s highest ranking officials including chief designer Oliver Stefani, who said he continues to be fascinated by the creativity of Skoda Academy students.

“The Student Car project combines three of Skoda’s great strengths: its bold can-do attitude, hands-on approach and tremendous team spirit,” he said.

“At Skoda Design, we are very happy to be part of this project. It’s our aim to give these talented youngsters a comprehensive, tangible insight into our everyday work and get them excited about it.”

No Skoda Academy vehicles have been put into production as yet, but previous models have attracted widespread auto industry attention – especially the 2020 Skoda Slavia convertible sports car.
