Skoda to offer wireless phone charging

Czech car-maker to launch its cable-free charging at the Swiss motor show, for Octavia and Superb

Skoda has announced that it will offer customers of its Octavia and new Superb the ability to charge their smartphone without a cable as part of a new option pack.

Opt for Skoda’s ‘Phonebox with wireless charging’ and the technology will charge most modern smartphones via induction instead of the traditional cable charging.

To be launched at the Geneva motor show on March 1, Skoda has not announced how much the new option will cost but says the new charging option will be available in Europe from April 2016. It’s not known when the option will be offered in Australia.

Skoda says currently many smartphones made by Google, Blackberry, LG, Nokia, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony are all capable of being charged inductively.

Other devices like Apple’s iPhone, meanwhile, can be charged wirelessly but need specially designed cases.
